Connect to a computer

Unattended access

Reach your own computer - or one you look after - when nobody is there to read out a password, even after a restart.

Normally you need the password shown on the other computer's screen, which changes every time ScreenSharePRO restarts there. An unattended password is a permanent second password you set yourself, so you can connect at any time.

Set it up (on the computer to be reached)

  1. Open Settings → Unattended Access.
  2. Type a password into New password and again into Confirm password: exactly 9 characters, letters and digits only, with at least one letter and one number.
  3. To reach the computer also at the Windows sign-in screen - after a restart or sign-out - keep Let viewers connect to this computer ticked. Untick Allow keyboard and mouse at the sign-in screen if viewers should only watch there.
  4. Click Save Settings. Windows may ask for administrator approval.
Settings → Unattended Access, as it looks the first time you open it (every setting at its default).
What each setting on the Unattended Access page does
#SettingDefaultWhat it does
1 Unattended password Not set A permanent password for this computer. Unlike the session password on the main screen, it does not change, so you (or your IT team) can connect at any time. Enter it in New password and Confirm password, then Save Settings. Exactly 9 characters, letters and digits only, with at least one letter and one number. Leave both boxes empty to keep the current one. Tick "Remove unattended password" to delete it; tick Show to see it.
2 Let viewers connect to this computer On This computer stays reachable at the Windows sign-in screen - after a restart, a sign-out or a user switch. Needs an unattended password. Applies to everyone who uses this computer, so changing it asks for Windows administrator approval. If approval is refused, the box goes back to what it was and a "Not changed" message appears. Not available on a per-user install: it needs the background service (Enable full control).
3 Allow keyboard and mouse at the sign-in screen On A viewer can type a Windows password at the sign-in screen and sign in remotely. Untick it for watch-only unattended access. Applies to everyone who uses this computer, so changing it asks for Windows administrator approval. If approval is refused, the box goes back to what it was and a "Not changed" message appears.

Connect with it

On your computer, enter that computer's ID and the unattended password, and connect as usual. You are not asked to wait for approval - an unattended connection never asks, so a computer nobody is sitting at stays reachable.

Important: Keep the unattended password private and change it if it may have been shared. To remove it, tick Remove unattended password and save.

Note: Access while nobody is signed in needs the ScreenSharePRO background service. On a per-user install the two options are greyed out - click Enable full control...; see Limited control and full control.
