How to Record a Remote Desktop Session to MP4

Record a ScreenSharePRO session from the viewer or the host, find the MP4 file, or record every session automatically. Plus what the other side is told.

How to Record a Remote Desktop Session to MP4

A recording of a remote session is useful for training, for handing work over to a colleague, and as your own record of what was changed. ScreenSharePRO records to a standard MP4 file you can play anywhere.

How do I record from the viewer?

In the viewer window's toolbar, select Record. The button changes to Stop recording; select it again to finish. The recording is saved as an MP4 file.

How do I record from the host?

The person sharing their screen can record it too: select Record session in the sessions bar on the host. This records the screen being shared, and needs the desktop app on the host.

Where are recordings saved?

By default, in your Videos\ScreenSharePro folder. To change it, set Save recordings and screenshots to in Settings. Files are named with the date and time the recording started, for example ScreenSharePro_2026-10-23_09-30-00.mp4 (in UTC).

Can I record every session automatically?

Yes. Turn on Record every session automatically in Settings. It is off by default.

What's in the file?

Recordings are H.264 MP4 files made with the Windows built-in encoder. They are video only: ScreenSharePRO sessions don't carry audio. If the remote screen's size changes mid-recording, the recording keeps its starting size. The browser web app records too, but saves a .webm file instead.

Does the other person know?

Yes. The host is always told on screen when a viewer starts recording, and the host can stop viewers recording with Let viewers record or take screenshots. If you record someone else's screen, make sure they're happy with it and that it's allowed where you are. Read more about session recording.
